ROYAL FAMILY MEMBER COMES OUT GAY
A member of the British royal family has announced to the world that he’s gay.
Lord Ivar Mountbatten, 53 is the cousin of Queen Elizabeth and the great, great grandson of Queen Victoria. He announced that he met his boyfriend. James Coyle, 54 during a ski trip in March.
“I am a lot happier now though I am not 100 percent comfortable with being gay,” he recently told the Mail.
He was married to Penelope Thompson for 17 years. They divorced in 2011.
“Being a Mountbatten was never the problem. It was the generation into which I was born into. When I was growing up, it was known as “the love that dared not speak its name.” But what’s amazing now is how far we have all come in terms of acceptance. Coming out is such a funny phrase but I suppose it’s what I did in a roundabout way, emerging to a place I’m happy to be. I’ve struggled with my sexuality and in some way I still do, it has been a real journey to reach this point.” Lord Mountbatten told the Mail.
“Simply talking about it in public is a huge step for me. Up to this point, I’ve had a heterosexual lifestyle so living with a man is really new. One step at a time.” he added.
Lord Mountbatten admitted that despite the steep learning curve his new lifestyle brings, it’s also been a blessing as his daughters prefer to have a another man around the house instead of a stepmother.
He said his boyfriend and his ex-wife attend the same yoga classes so at first there was some confusion. Coyle said Penny had to explain to classmates that he wasn’t her new boyfriend, he was her ex-husbands. Although Lord Mountbatten and Coyle have a rule against public affection, all their friends and family members are aware of their relationship.
“Now every one in the family knows and they are very supportive,” he stated.
“Finding James means I won’t have to lie to anyone or grow old on my own,” he added.
